7 Self Care Practices for the Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is a sacred time to honor stillness, rest, and renewal.

Nature reminds us to slow down and embrace the beauty of stillness. This sacred pause, marked by the longest night of the year, invites us to turn inward, reflect, and nurture ourselves.

Let’s explore these 7 self-care practices that can support you in nurturing your mind, body, and spirit.

  1. Play some relaxing music, light a candle, take your journal and write about all that you are grateful for this year, even if it has been challenging.

  2. Reflect: Journaling during the solstice is a powerful way to release what no longer serves you and plant seeds of intention for the new year. Try these prompts: What do I want to let go of? What do I want to welcome into my life?

  3. Indoor Grounding Visualization: Follow along with this guided grounding exercise for everyday peace and calm. If you’re inside, you can still ground yourself by placing your bare feet on the floor. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Imagine the nerve endings of your feet reaching deep into the earth. Feel the connection as the earth’s energy rises up to meet you.

  4. Hum for Inner Warmth: Humming creates gentle vibrations that soothe the nervous system and bring a sense of warmth and grounding. Take a moment each day to hum a favorite tune or simply let the sound flow naturally.

  5. Sound Meditation: A simple sound meditation using vocal toning can help you embrace the stillness of winter. You can follow along with me on this video.

    • Find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.

    • Begin with slow, deep breaths. Start to release the breath on a sound. Let the vibrations wash over you, calming your mind and connecting you to the present moment.

  6. .Connect with Daylight: Spend a few moments during daylight hours looking towards the sun (not directly at it). This simple act helps regulate your circadian rhythm and boosts your mood by connecting you to the natural light cycle of the day, which can help alleviate SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

  7. Take a Bath: Give yourself some TLC with an epsom salt or sea salt bath. Add your favorite essential oil for an aromatherapy experience!

The winter solstice reminds us that even in the darkness, light is on its way. By embracing the stillness of the season and nurturing ourselves with sound, voice, and vibration, we can align with this natural rhythm and enter the new year feeling renewed and connected.
